Charles was educated in the Ripley schools and after high school, he attended the Cincinnati Law School, graduating in 1869. He was a prominent lawyer and served, for a time, as the prosecuting attorney for Brown County.
On 10 December 1872, he married Louisa Weiand. They had three children, Allen, Robert, and Alice. The family made their home on Third Street. Charles was an active member of the Masonic Order, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Pythias. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church. Death took Charles on 12 June 1927. He is buried in Maplewood Cemetery.
